Civil War Soldier Monument
Artist: Civil War Veteran & Local Sculptor, William Pollock (1827-1912) - Fort Dodge, IA
Location: Oakland Cemetery, 1617 North 15th Street
Year: Unveiled May 30, 1900
Dimensions: 15 feet tall

Description: Erected in memory of unknown soldiers of the Union Army, 1861-65. The monument has orange colored lichen growing on the surface. Follow 15th Street North to the first cemetery entrance. Then follow the main road in the cemetery to the monument on the top of the hill. Notable graves of two black Civil War soldiers, with markers provided by the U.S. Government in years before 2003, with metal military marker and small cloth American flag. These are for “Joseph Dinner, Co H, 1 USCI, 1890,” and “Joseph A. Palmer, Serg Co F, 54 Mass Inf.”
"Sculptor William Pollock - a self taught pioneer sculptor. He did a number of larger than life lions and dogs which still exist in Fort Dodge. The Civil War Monument was funded by Fort Dodge school children.” - Roger Natte
Dedicated by: “Fort Donelson Post No. 236, Fort Doge and Citizens of Webster County, Iowa” inscribed on the base of the monument.
