Description: Sumner Heman, a Fort Dodge draftsman, uses his skill with pen and brush to preserve Iowa scenes. Sumner Heman was born on April 29, 1917 and passed away on January 22, 1995 at 77 years old. “I’m self taught and have no formal art education, which I feel is an advantage as I feel that one is not influenced by any one artist outside of himself. Drawing started at a very early age, always wanted to be an artist since I can recall. Many interests in Indian, outdoors, trains, airplanes, design, people, etc., many varied interests and contacts have been helpful to combine many subjects to draw from. Other interests are cooking, designing and build furniture for my own use and do Indian beading and costumes.” - quote by Sumner Heman for exhibition at the Blanden Art Museum in 1978.
